“We recognize that all veterans have given something of themselves to this nation, and some have given everything -- laying down their lives to defend the freedoms we hold so dear,’’ he continued. “We honor those great veterans who have given their lives in the defense of liberty and we also recognize all veterans who have bravely and honorably worn the uniform of this great nation.

“To all of our veterans -- to you who are here this evening, especially those who are being honored from the Robert J. Slattery Detachment #206 of the Marine Corps League --we have a simple, yet heartfelt message: Thank you, all of you, for your service.’’

Robert Slattery was a Morris County resident who grew up in the Whippany section of Hanover Township. He was a United States Marine who was killed in action on July 6, 1967, while a member of H&S Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, and 3rd Marine Division by an artillery rocket in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam.

It is in Robert’s honor that the Morris County Detachment of the Marine Corps League in Whippany, New Jersey was issued a Charter and renamed the Lance/Cpl. Robert J. Slattery Detachment on Aug. 30, 1967.

His brother, Michael Slattery, accepted the county medal in behalf of his late brother.
