Single Stream Recycling to Start in Pequannock on Nov. 2 -- Residential Pickup Days will be Every Monday

Starting on Monday, Nov. 2, there will be major changes to the recycling effort in Pequannock, which will join the other 15 municipalities in Morris County to have single-stream recycling collection services provided by the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority.

Importantly, the recycling day will now be every Monday for all residential properties that currently receive recycling services directly through Pequannock Township.

“Single-stream recycling means that all bottles, cans, paper and cardboard may be mixed together and placed in the same curbside recycling bins, so that all materials get collected on the same day,” said Kathleen Hourihan, District Recycling Coordinator, with the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority.

The change to single-stream recycling and the resultant change in the collection day is a result of a new contract between Pequannock and the Morris County MUA. Collected recyclables will be delivered to a recycling facility in Mine Hill for sorting.

“We are pleased that the Morris County MUA is able to provide our residents with the convenience of single-stream recycling at a very competitive price,’’ said Pequannock Mayor Catherine Winterfield.

The adoption of single-stream recycling will result in some changes in the list of acceptable materials. No longer accepted are:

  • Plastic bags
  • Bubble and shrink wrap
  • Plastic wrapping
  • Toys
  •  Hard cover books
  •  Molded lawn chairs
  • Any plastic items coded #3 and #6 (not acceptable)

Some guidelines for preparing recyclable material include:
  • Put shredded paper in a clear or translucent tied plastic bag.
  • All containers must be clean, dry and free of food residue.
  • Newspapers and cardboard boxes should not be tied.
  • Large cardboard boxes should be flattened, folded and stacked inside one cardboard box.
  • Recycling containers should be at curbside the night before the collection day.
  • The maximum weight of a filled curbside recycling container is 50 pounds
  • The recommended container size is 32 gallons. If containers are too big, they are likely to exceed the 50 pound weight limit.

Recyling Materials Sorting Operation

Plastic bottles and non-bottle plastics coded with #1 PETE, #2 HDPE, #4 LDPE, #5 PP, and #7 OTHER are acceptable recyclables along with aluminum cans, clean aluminum foil, pie plates and trays, steel cans, glass bottles and jars, paper, corrugated cardboard, chipboard, junk mail, magazines and newspapers.

The numbers for plastic containers are found inside the triangular recycling symbol that is stamped on the plastic containers.

Examples of non-bottle plastic items which are acceptable are margarine tubs, yogurt containers, clam-shell containers, frozen food trays, and plastic lids.

Plastic items should be at least 6 to 8 ounces in size and lids should be at least 3 inches in diameter to be recycled. Smaller plastic items should be placed in the trash.

Information on the Pequannock recycling schedule and material preparation guidelines will be included in the township newsletter to be mailed to homes this month, according to Mayor Winterfield.

Also, she urged residents to stop at town hall to pick up free single-stream recycling decals for their recycling containers.
