Mum's the Word at Frelinghuysen Arboretum this Weekend --ChrysantheMUM that is!

Nothing says ‘fall’ in New Jersey quite like a display of that iconic autumn flower – the chrysanthemum. Native to China, the chrysanthemum was grown there as early as the 15th century B.C. both for ornamental and medicinal purposes, and has become an autumn staple in New Jersey gardens.

On Saturday, Oct. 10, from noon to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the New Jersey State Chrysanthemum Society will presents its free annual show and at the Morris County Park Commission’s Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris Township.

Today’s mums are the result of centuries of breeding. There are 13 classifications of this flower, almost all of which will be on display at this weekend’s show.

“Whether incurve -- with the petals curved inwards, or reflex -- whose petals curve downward and overlap, or pompom, anemone, spider, brush or quill, there is a form and a color of chrysanthemum for everyone and every garden,” said remarked Lesley Parness, the Park Commission’s Superintendent of Horticultural Education.

At the show, you’ll be able to meet gardening hobbyists, learn what goes into growing and showing flowers to be judged, and purchase some lovely specimens to take home. Club members will be on hand to talk to the public and converse about their favorite flower.
